May 1st 1899,  Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was opened.

Built to replace the ill fated and wrongly positioned Cape St George Lighthouse built in 1860.
Although the light was extinguished in 1899, Cape St George was still causing confusion to passing ships and was deemed a navigation hazard.  in 1904 the Australian Squadron of the British Royal Navy shelled the tower and reduced it to what we see today.
